Transportation Club of Memphis History
Condensed History of the beginning of the Transportation Club as summarized by Mr. H. A. Landry on June 30, 1960 composed by J.F. Carlton, H.A. Landry, Jas. B. McGinnis, Alonzo Bennett, Henry Stigler & others.
May 1907 a group of railroad men met in the N.C. & St.L. Railway Office in the Tennessee Trust Building, 81 Madison Building & organized the Traffic & Transportation Club of Memphis.
The following were present:
- B.H. Hamilton, President
- J.W. Turner, Secretary
- Jas. F. Carlton, Treasurer
Charter Members:
- B.G. Sargent
- S.J. York
- Harry Cage
- John Scott
After several months of inactivity the funds on hand were withdrawn & used to finance a party for the members.
The Club was dormant until 1913 when a meeting was held and V. T. Fort was elected President. Mr. Fort retained this office until 1919 and during this period very few meetings were held.
In 1920, J.M. Walsh was elected President. In 1921 J.M. Beley was elected President and appointed committee to draft a set of by-laws composed of Henry W. Stigler, W.B. Ryan, & Jas. F. Carlton. In 1922 an election was held and Ben H. Wallace was elected President with a full complement of supporting officers.
The organization really started to function as a Traffic club as of this year. In 1927 the name was changed to Traffic Club of Memphis.
In 2016, the name was updated to The Transportation Club of Memphis.
